Homelessness Intervention Program - Community Mediation
Recently, Community Mediation's Homelessness Intervention Program (HIP) helped a middle-aged man stuck in a difficult and emotionally-draining situation. This man lives on a fixed income provided by SSI due to an unfortunate medical condition that prevents him from obtaining gainful employment. He had been living with his elderly mother, who also suffered some medical and emotional issues, in a home that was officially condemned. His mother was able to secure housing through Also-Cornerstone, where she was also receiving counseling services. 18 days after moving into this new housing, the elderly mother died.
Her son was left in an apartment that he did not qualify for and could not afford, all while grieving the loss of his mother. Within 6 weeks, with the help of the HIP, he was living in a new apartment with a rent of less than 60% of his fixed income. CM paid $600 toward his security deposit and he was able to cover the remaining balance and still have enough to live on.
